Strasbourg has been the epicenter of French and German wars in the past. The city was seized every now and then by both the countries over centuries. After the world War II, it finally came under France.

The off-shoot of war is the confluence of both French and German that is evident in Strasbourg’s culture, food and architecture. Beer and wine culture co-exist. Tradition of half-timbered medieval houses co-exist with French mansions. So are the soaring cathedrals and scenic canals.  

Due to its historic past, Strasbourg’s historic centre of Grand Ile is classified as an UNESCO World Heritage Site

The city is not just the congruence of unique cross culture appeal. But it is international, multi-lingual and gastronomic delight of Alsacian food. It is a cosmopolitan hub and home of many European Institutions.

Tennis fans visit Strasbourg to watch Internationalaux de Strasbourg, a professional women’s tennis tournanment that is held every year.

University of Strasbourg is the second largest in France, and is also popular among students world wide.

How to get to Strasbourg

There are direct flights from UK and other European cities to Strasbourg. Alternative nearest international airports are Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Basel. And an additional 2 hour train journey to reach Strasbourg (approximate time).

There are roughly 14 trains that run from Paris to Strasbourg everyday, and the journey takes 2 hours and 48 minutes. You can also take the train from London St Pancras International to Paris, and change train to Strasbourg. 

Best time to visit Strasbourg

Strasbourg is a landlocked city sandwiched between the borders of France and Germany, close to the Black Forest Region. If you prefer mild climate, cool breeze, it is recommended to visit during Spring (Mar – May) or Autumn (Sep – Nov).

Spring brings in a riot of colours from the bloom and pleasant weather. That said, personally, summer is the best time (June – Aug), when the weather is warm/hot.

If you don’t want scorching heat, choose late spring or early autumn, both of which make for a comfortable weather. There are various festivals that happen during the Summer time.

Winter is cold and grey, but it also happens to be one of the best time. Christmas in Strasbourg is famous worldwide when the city gets into the festive spirit making it all magical and one of the best in France. For this reason, Strasbourg is also christened as Capital of Christmas

Strasbourg Cathedral is the top most attraction in Strasbourg, a must-visit place in the city. Also known as Cathedral of Our Lady, the Cathedral is one of the most impressive 15th century Gothic cathedral.  The cathedral is a UNESCO heritage site and the architecture dominates the skyline.

The interiors of the Cathedral include the 12th century stained glass windows, suspended pipe organ, richly ornate puplit, cathedral tapestries and the grand astronomical clock, a mathematical marvel.

For adrenaline experience, climb the 300 odd spiral stairs and you will be dumbfounded by the views. You get to see as far as Black Forest on one side, Vosges mountain on another side, and the chic red roofed houses of Strasbourg.

In year 2016, the cathedral was celebrating 1000th anniversary of it’s foundation. To celebrate, they’ve put together a fascinating light and sound show showcasing the history of Cathedral in the Cathedral walls (above pictures) along with a brilliant display and storytelling.  

2. La Petite France

Perhaps the most prominent and picturesque place in Strasbourg is Petite- France (means Little France). A visit to Strasbourg is incomplete without seeing the insta worthy Petitle France.

Due to its popularity, Petite France is usually crowded, and dotted with ample restaurants and cafes.

Situated along the canal on the island of River Ile, you will find immaculate half timbered houses sitting on either side with pretty windows and balconies.  

Add to it a splash of summer colors and geranium flowers along the canal, you can’t ask for a better postcard perfect location. 

Stroll along the canal watching these colorful buildings, smelling the aromas from the nearby bakery and restaurants, or even dine at one!

3. European Quarter

There are a range of European Institutions in Strasbourg, the oldest of which dates back to 1815. Currently there are 20 such institutions in this city either having a sole or one of their main seats here, which gives Strasbourg another name “Capital of Europe“.

Some of the famous institutions include Council of Europe (European Court of Human Rights),  European Parliament, Palace of Europe and information relays like European Documentation Centre, just to name a few.  

4. Barrage Vauban

What was once a river defense (barrage) to store gunpowder and protect canons is now an impressive bridge in the Grand Ile. It was erected as a weir in the 17th century according to the plans of Marquis de Vauban (one of the foremost military Engineer famed for his designs in fortifications).  Barrage Vauban is one of the 20 bridges in Strasbourg, located in Grand Ile.  

5. Les Ponts Couverts

Located at the end of the Petite France district is Ponts Couverts (meaning Covered bridge). This is a four tower bridge spanning across the River Ile.  In middle ages, the bridges shown in the above picture used to be a covered bridge, and the then king used the bridge to protect the city and as a crossing point to the Alsace region.  These bridges face Barrage Vaugan.

Boat tours are the best way to experience the canals and architecture of Strasbourg. The boat tours start near the quay by Palais des Rohan and circumnavigates the Grand Ile taking you through the beautiful parts of the city, through the historic quarters of Grand Ile, Petite France district, and up until the European Quarters. Alternatively, you can walk along the canals at your own pace.

Apart from the striking Strasbourg Cathedral, there are many medieval churches  that are Romanesque and Neo Gothic. You can also spot Baroque style buildings, Wilhelmian and contemporary architectures among others.

8. Palais des Rohan

Rohan palace is one of the important buildings in Strasbourg. Built between 1732 and 1742, this is one of the beautiful creations of French 18th century architecture. Now the palace is home to archaeological and fine art museum.

9. Place Kléber (Kléber Square)

This is the most important and main square in Strasbourg. An ideal place to sit and relax, drink beer or wine and do people watching. During Christmas, this square is the centre for Christmas Markets.

When it comes to museum, the city has many to offer. Alsacian Museum, Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Strasboug Museum of Fine Arts, Historical Museum of Strasboug, Archeological Museum, Museum of Decorative Arts, Archeological Museum and more. What to eat and Where to eat in Strasbourg

Being located strategically between two different cultures, Strasbourg has taken the good and the food of both the countries and is a culinary delight. Beer and Wine are equally famous. The Alsatian traditional food such as Bibeleskas, Bredele, Bretzel, Choucroute (Sauerkraut), Flammekuche are a treat to one’s tummy. Most of these traditional food is usually served with meat, but there are vegetarian versions available. Some of the vegan/vegetarian restaurants in Strasbourg that are worth trying: 

VELICIOUS, 43 Rue Geiler, 67000: Velicous is the first vegan restaurant opened in strasbourg in 2015. Featured dishes include sandwiches, baguettes, hotdogs, salads, as well as mini cakes and brownies.

AU POITRON, 24 Rue Sainte-Madeleine, 67000: A vegetarian restaurant serving authentic French food, pizzas and pastas. Friendly staff and nominally priced food are the highlight.

HARMONIE BOWL & JUICE, 5 Rue St Étienne, 67000: Must visit this place for delicious, healthy vegan food (gluten free options available). Serving Buddha bowls, quinoa, curries, tofu and cold pressed fresh juices, the service is good and pocket friendly. Plus the staff speak fluent English. 

Where to stay in Strasbourg

Be it boutique hotels, spa, chic city breaks or apartments, the city is dotted with many hotels and accommodations that suit all kind of travellers.  Some of the popular locations are  Old Town, La Petite France and European Quarter.

We explored the city using the Strasbourg Pass. For 18.90 euros, you get Strasbourg Pass which offers free entrance to the Cathedral’s rooftop, batorama tour,  an audio guide for the city, free entry to one of the museum (of your choice). The pass is valid for 3 consecutive days with is an added advantage, if you plan to stay for more than a day.

The pass also offers half price discounts on many attractions and guided walk.  This pass lets you explore the city without pressing the time. The booklet that comes along with the pass is super useful, and has extremely important information. The Strasbourg Tourism Website has a lot more information and downloadable maps and guides for the ease of travellers. 

Is Strasbourg worth visiting?

Strasbourg is claimed as France’s most cyclable city.  And the city also has some of the best tram transport. On top of this, all the main tourist attraction are within the walking distance.The old town – Grand Ile has been part of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city is also the Capital of Alsace region making it the best place to explore the famous Alsace Wine Route. It is the Capital of Europe for being home to stunning European institutions.  Lastly, it is also the Capital of Christmas in Europe. Truly speaking, Strasbourg is a year round destination and one city that everybody enjoys visiting to.

    Gooorgeous architecture isn’t it!? I love the way all the roofs seem to have teeny extra windows. It makes me wonder what the rooms are like up there – I wonder if they were originally for servants!?
