Puerto de Mogán – Venice of the Canaries
There’s a reason why Puerto de Mogán has been christened as “Venice of the Canaries”. It’s picturesque canals, bridges and waterfront architecture bear a striking resemblance to the waterways of Venice. While Puerto de Mogán is relatively much smaller village, the auro and sense of romanticism it evokes is reminiscent of the Italian city.
Where is Puerto de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán is located in the southeast coast of Gran Canaria, in Spain. The Canary Islands are an autonomous community of Spain, situated in the Atlantic Ocean off northwest coast of Africa.
This picturesque whitewashed fishing village hugs the Atlantic coast on one side and has a host of modern resorts on the other side. With vibrant atmosphere, quaint set up, charming marina and best beaches, Puerto de Mogán is a perfect holiday destination for relaxing holiday.

How to reach Puerto de Mogán
Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is the nearest airport You can hire a taxi or shuttle service or rent a car from here. The distance between the village and the airport is approximately 54 kms and the journey time takes 45 minutes. Maspalomas to Puerto de Mogán is 25kms and it took us around 20 minutes by car.
Alternatively, Global Las Palmas operates bus service from Ocean Park – GC 500, that runs every 30 minutes connecting Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán, and the bus journey takes 48 minutes.
Is Puerto de Mogán worth visiting
The heart of Puerto de Mogán is its kaleidoscopic village, quaint cafes, bohemian allure and laid back ambience. Add to it buzzing market scene, lively hymn of locals and sun-kissed coast, Puerto de Mogán is a delight to visit. Venture beyond the marina, Puerto de Mogán reveals its natural wonders. Hiking trails are at the doorstep welcoming adventurers and hiking enthusiasts alike. For such a small town, there are plethora of things to do in Puerto de Mogán and in the surrounding towns.

How many days required to explore Mogán
With the plethora of things to do and explore, you can stay in Puerto de Mogán for atleast a week. Enjoy it’s laid back vibe, make friends with locals, immerse in the village vibes and friday market for a few days . You can also explore the neighbouring places like Taurito and Veneguera, or venture away to Maspalomas or La Palmas. Either ways, Gran Canaria and Puerto de Mogán wouldn’t disappoint you.
Top Things to do in Puerto de Mogán
For such a small village, there’s plethora of things to do and indulge in Puerto de Mogán. We recommend staying in Puerto de Mogán to be able to enjoy and immerse in the relaxing holiday.
1. Playa de Mogán
Playa de Mogán is a small sheltered beach cosy enough to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere whether you are here as a couple or with kids. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants around. Sunbeds and shower facilities are available as well.
2. Walk along the marina
Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the beautiful marina and towards the harbour admiring the myriad boats and yacht lined up neatly. You can walk upto the little lighthouse and the entire walk is about 20-25 minutes. Strike a conversation or two with the local fisherman, and you will be delighted by their talks.
3. Explore Puerto de Mogán Old Town
A visit to Puerto de Mogán is incomplete without exploring its old town. Walk around the Venetian canals and wander through the whitewashed buildings under the labyrinth of bougainvillea flowers. this is definitely the most instagrammable part of Puerto de Mogán.
4. Explore the Friday Market
If you happen to be in Puerto de Mogán on a Friday, do not miss out the vibrant Friday Market ru by the locals, offering variety of goods like fresh produce, crafts, souvenirs etc.
5. Indulge in a waterfront dining
The beach promenade of Puerto de Mogán is flooded with many restaurants. Once you’ve had your slice of sand, sea and sun, head over to one of the nicest restaurants and enjoy a wholesome dining experience. While the seafood is famous, as vegan/vegetarians, we managed to find a lovely lunch for ourself that consisted of Vegetarian speghetti, Garlic Bread and Spanish Omlette (Tortilla Espanola).

6. Take a boat tour
You can take a ferry and hop over to Puerto Rico, the nearby town which is 30 minute ride. Alternatively there are also many boat trips and excursions from Puerto de Mogán. You can indulge in private or group tours, do snorkel and spot dolphins.
7. Watersports in Puerto de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán is home to many water-sports activities that include jet-ski, parasailing, paddle boarding, snorkelling and scuba diving. There are also diving centures that offer PADI courses. We took a combo ticket for Jetski, Parasail and Banana boat ride, and what fun it was!
8. Submarine Adventure
This is one of the family friendly tours in Puerto de Mogán that you can enjoy. The tour operates from the marina allowing passengers to descend below the surface inside the submarine to be able to witness the vibrant underwater world, without getting wet. Kids will have great fun spotting fishes.
9. Watch sunset from Mirador de Puerto de Mogán
If you are looking for a vantage point of the village, valley and sea and a short hike around, definitely visit Mirador de Puerto de Mogán. Follow the signposted ascend and 257 steps up and enjoy the sweeping views from the top. You can enjoy the beautiful sunset from this viewpoint.
10. Cruz de Mogán
Cruz de Mogán, translated to Cross of Mogán is a scenic viewpoint offering breathtaking panoramic views of rugged landscape around. The cross itself is a cultural and historical symbol, often associated with local traditions and events. From Puerto de Mogán, head northeast on GC-1 closer to Mogán. You can look for well marked signs to this viewpoint.
11. Barranco de Mogán and other trails
Venture beyond the marina and whitewashed village, and Puerto de Mogán reveals its natural wonders. Hiking trail beckon the adventurous, weaving through the rugged landscapes and offering breathtaking panoramas. You can take public transport or a short drive along GC-1 and reach Mogán. There are many more hiking trails that begin from here. Hike, enjoy the views and capture the towering cliffs and rugged ravines. Most popular trials include Barranco de Mogán and Mogán to Veneguera trail.
12. Lago Taurito Water Park
Lago Taurito is a salt water park located very close to Puerto de Mogán, in Taurito. A great day out with plenty of water slides and attractions for all ages.
13. Explore Veneguera
Yet another small but beautiful village is Veneguera, nestled amidst the island’s striking landscapes, offering peaceful and rustic setting. Unlike Puerto de Mogán, Veneguera is not fully developed and retains its rural charm characterised by lush vegetation and greenery. Veneguera beach is a protected natural area and is one of the untouched beaches in Gran Canaria, and is a difficult road to reach. As a true true hidden gem you can mango, banana and papaya vegetations around.

Los Guayres, Av. Los Marrero, 2, Puerto de Mogán, 35138: A gastronomic experience that reinterprets the classic flavours of Canarian cuisine, this is one of the finest restaurants in Mogán. They do offer vegan/vegetarian friendly dishes.
Namaste India, Playa de Mogan, Avenida Varadero, 26: Family run restaurant with focussing on punjabi indian dishes, plenty of vegetarian and vegan option available.
Al Bek, Paseo los Pescadores, 5, Puerto de Mogán, 35139: A lovely lebanese restaurnat slightly tucked away from the buzzing centre, but offers a variety of vegan food including falafel, hummus, pita bread, salad and rice options.

Yes, there were flowers literally everywhere, looked great! I don't think they have boats around the canal, since the water drains off to the sea during low tide everyday, I guess!
