Abbotshaw House is a Farmhouse plus Bed & Breakfast situated in the Liddlesdale Valley, close to the village of Newcastleton in Scottish Borders. The house dates back to 15th century and is truly surrounded by idyllic landscape of nature and nature alone! As secluded as it is, the house is built in a massive 363 acre farmland with sufficient parking space and woodland walks around. We are glad to have found this place that truly stands out as a weekend getaway away from the buzz of the city, surrounded by rolling hills and tranquility.
A home was converted into a Farmhouse B & B. Hence all the furniture and interior decorations were meant for making it a home. That personalized touch can be seen everywhere right from curtains draping the windows, soft and silky linens, vintage wall paper, mahogany furniture and how spacious each room and bathrooms were. Pam & Tom are the lovely couple who run this B & B besides their farm.

The Riever Suite
We staying in this light and airy suite with gorgeous floral wall papers, overlooking the Liddlesdale valley. The owners call it “a room with a room” and we cannot disagree. The room is so spacious that for sometime I completely forgot that I am actually staying in a B & B. The room features a super king size handcarved mahogany bed with pocket sprung mattress and luxurious egyptian cotton bedding.
The room also includes a catchy dressing table made in mahogany, 40 inch freeview TV, two fabulous chaise-lounges, a dining table, chairs, bath robes and a huge wardrobe. They kept us a couple of slices of walnut cake in the table for us.
The en-suite bathroom is airy and immense with power shower, bath, hand basin, WC and a bathtub. The room also had a great choice of travel magazine and booklets about Scottish Borders.

Common Living Room
The common living area is just perfect to relax, sneak into your cosy Pj, sip a wine, and watch a movie with your family. The B & B also has a good collection of DVDs and board games. So there’s no chance one can get bored.
Breakfast
The breakfast room with the traditional log fire, great spread of breakfast menu from cereals, to hand cut fruits and spreadable. We had limited Scottish Breakfast (vegetarian version) of stuffed mushroom (yummy!), baked beans, potato scones, and sauteed mushrooms.
Our Window View
A free view of such a gorgeous landscape from our room. We woke up to the mist laden hills, that were shooed away by the bright beaming Sun in the later part of the day.
Things To Do
Just few minutes of walk will take you to the Liddleswater, a lovely river flowing around through the borders. Abbotshaw House have got fishing rights in the river, so if the guest is interested in fishing they could spend a day enjoying what they love. They also organize clay pigeon shooting games upon request.
The location is also perfect for horse riding holiday. Abbotshaw house provide stabling to the guests’ horses with 363 acre of private land, and miles & miles of forest track to enjoy horse riding.
Also, the area is one of the dark sky zones in UK, and being close to Keider Observatory, one cannot miss the chance of star gazing.
The nearest pub/restaurant/shop is about 2-3 miles away (in Newcastleton). Pam and Tom are so lovely, they offer to pick up the guests from the pub in the evenings. They can arrange for dinner and packed lunches upon request.
Conclusion
The B & B gained popularity quickly after their launch. Travellers around the world come to Scottish Borders and stay here to experience the tranquil atmosphere. Local people return back to the B & B to have a luxurious weekend getaway. The B & B gets super busy during the lambing season (Mar/April/May) and kids can enjoy the visit to their farm to see the new born lambs.
Pam & Tom asked us if there are any areas of improvement. We’ve been scratching our head for a couple of days thinking what do we critic about? Honestly, there wasn’t anything we were not happy about. It was just a perfect place for anyone. And we liked the way they treated the guests, attention to detail in everything they do. We’ve only spend less time there, but we spoke so much with them, and got to know them well. They are on this big ambition to convert the whole place eco-friendly and sustainable environment.
“Arrive as guest, leave as friend” is their tagline/motto. And they live up to what they say. The couple have always gone extra mile in making the guest stay comfortable. Both Sri & I are at consensus when we say Abbotshaw house would top the list of all the B & B’s we’ve ever stayed so far. A highly recommended place to stay while you are travelling in Scottish Borders. We would definitely like to go back there, especially during the lambing season.
