Where is Malta?

Malta is an island country located in the Mediterranean Sea roughly 80kms south of Italy. There are three islands in this tiny island country – Malta, Gozo and Comino – Malta being the largest, and Comino, the smallest.

Malta is also home to three UNESCO Heritage Sites – The City of Valetta, Megalithic temples in Malta and Gozo and the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni.

Surprisingly for such a pocket sized country Malta is, there are plethora of things to see and do.

We went on a road trip around Malta and Gozo for 8 days during December.  Not the best kind of weather for a beach holiday, but a comfortable weather to explore the places, walk and hike around.

We kept Valetta as our base location while doing road trips to the north and south of the islands.

In this post, we’ll show you 30 photos that inspire you to visit Malta and ignite the wanderlust in you.

As a bonus, we have also added some really cool things that you might not know about Malta, plus plenty of information.

Why Visit Malta?

Here’s some more evident reasons why Malta is gaining popularity and becoming the most-sought holiday destination for solo travellers, couples, families and retired travellers.

LOCATION: Malta is in the centre of Mediterranean Sea making it easily accessible to fly from any of the European and African Countries. It is only a 3 hour flight journey from Britain.

LANGUAGE: English is one of the official languages in Malta (apart from Maltese). So there is absolutely no language barrier while you are on a holiday.

WEATHER: The sunny mediterrarean weather makes it a great choice for beach holiday spring to autumn. Winters are mild and are suitable for road trips and hiking. Needless to say, this is an all year round destination.

ATTRACTIONS: There are plenty of attractions and things to do in Malta that are suitable for all ages – historic monuments, freestanding megalithic temples, vibrant night life, kids water parks, popoye Village, long stretch of coastline dotted with sandy beaches, cliffs that are great for hiking. Malta is also one of the most popular destination for scuba divers!

ACCOMMODATIONS: There are many bay side hotels, luxury resorts, villas, AirBnBs in Malta that suits all range of travellers.

FOOD: Due to it’s geographic location, Malta’s cuisine is heavily influenced by its surrounding countries. Must try Maltese snack is Pastizzi, a warm savoury pastry filled with mushy peas.

Cool Facts about Malta

  • There are 365 churches in Malta
  • There are no forests and rivers in Malta
  • Malta’s coastline is home to many sunken world war ships
  • Malta was a British colony for 150 years
  • The Comino island is uninhabited
  • Malta is one of the smallest and densely populated countries

Getting Around

Public transport is good in Malta and Gozo Island.  There are also tour operators that run North and South Tours, Day tours to Gozo Island, which are good if you want to explore Malta in a short time frame. We used Day tour to Gozo Island and it was definitely the most easiest and comfortable way to go around Gozo. Although, I highly recommend hiring the car and road trip to the colourful corners of Malta. Pull over the car when you see a gorgeous cliff and savour the views. Or park them and go on a short hike.

NOTE: People drive on the left-hand side of the road, like in UK (something that they got inherited from the British rule).

Where to stay in Malta

Valetta is the biggest city and one of the most popular choices for travellers. Check the best hotels in Valetta and book your accommodation here. If you are looking for more options, Sliema is next good choice. There are many resorts, stays and apartments in Sliema.
